MONTPELIER, Vt. — January is a perfect time to enjoy winter in Vermont. Whether you’re here to ski, ride, snowmobile, shop or just relax, you’ll find plenty of exciting events and activities in Vermont. First Run
Burlington – January 1, 2011
Start your new year off on the right foot at RunVermont’s 23rd annual First Run 5K and kids’ half-mile and one-mile fun runs. Come to run or walk. Kids Fun Runs start at 10:30 a.m., and 5K race begins at 11 a.m. Memorial Auditorium, 250 Main Street. For more information, visit www.runvermont.org.

Lake Morey Winterfest
Fairlee – January 9, 2011
This event will offer outdoor and indoor activities for all ages and ski levels. Enjoy Nordic skating, snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing, winter travel skills, sledding, old fashioned ice cutting, igloo building, music, storytelling, dog sledding demos and more. Bring your own snowshoes, skis and skates or borrow them at the center. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hulbert Outdoor Center, Lake Morey Road. For more information, visit www.nordicskating.org/winterfest.

Torchlight Parade and Fireworks Extravaganza
West Dover – January 16, 2011
Mount Snow Ski & Snowboard School instructors will descend the Canyon ski trail in a beautiful torchlight glow. Immediately following the parade will be a huge fireworks display.  The festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m. Mount Snow Resort, Route 100. For more information, visit www.mountsnow.com.

Sleigh Ride Weekend
Woodstock – January 15-17, 2010
Enjoy a sleigh ride through frosty farm fields and take a turn with a jack jumper sled.  This weekend event also features programs and activities for all ages. 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Billings Farm & Museum, Route 12 and River Road. For more information, visit www.billingsfarm.org.

Stowe Winter Carnival
Stowe – January 17-29, 2011
Celebrate winter and snow at the annual Stowe Winter Carnival. This fun-filled winter festival features entertaining events such as snow golf, ski races, a kids’ carnival and ice carving and more. For more information, visit www.stowewintercarnival.com.

TD Bank Craftsbury Marathon 
Craftsbury Common – January 29, 2011
The biggest cross-country ski event in the Eastern United States is a 25-kilometer loop course traversing Vermont’s spectacular Northeast Kingdom. Racers, tourers and relay teams ski 25 or 50 kilometers through several small towns and villages starting and finishing on Craftsbury Common. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For details, visit www.craftsbury.com. ­

Winter Festival
Bennington – January 29, 2011
Enjoy a Penguin Plunge, snow/ice carving, an indoor carnival for kids, activities and more. The event will be held on Main Street in the Village of North Bennington. Penguin Plunge at 11 a.m.at Lake Paran Boat Launch. For more information, visit www.bennington.com.

Brookfield Ice Harvest
Brookfield – January 29, 2011
The annual Brookfield Ice Harvest recalls the history of ice harvesting through a talk, demonstration and hands-on competition for young and old. This family event provides the opportunity to see how ice was harvested on Sunset Lake at the turn of the century. Activities include ice cutting and ice boom demonstrations, an ice-hauling contest, a chance to try hand-made snowshoes and view ice sculpting. Admission is free. Route 65. Vermont Romp to Stomp
Stratton – January 29, 2011
Stratton Resort is home to the first Tubbs Romp to Stomp out Breast Cancer in history. This fundraiser, which benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, features a 3K or 5K snowshoe walk or a 3K snowshoe race. Registration is open to adults and children. For more information, visit www.stratton.com.

Northern Roots Music Festival
Brattleboro – January 29, 2011
The Brattleboro Music Center's annual Northern Roots Festival brings together local and regional musicians representing the best of various northern musical traditions including Irish, Scottish, English, Swedish and French Canadian. The festival includes participant workshops, sessions and mini-concerts from noon to 5:30 p.m., and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. New England Youth Theater, Flat Street. Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash
East Burke – Jan. 29-30, 2011
The Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash is a family-oriented event for pet enthusiasts. Come see some of the world's most competitive sprint racing teams compete against each other in the spectacular setting of the Green Mountains. Enjoy food, children’s games, activities and more.
